She pushed the send button and got ready for bed. Tomorrow was a work day, but she would phone Lois and arrange a latte so she could fill her in.

Lois had a busy schedule, so Melanie had to be flexible. Because Lois heard the urgency in her friend’s voice, she made it a priority to set up a coffee date. It was the season Melanie loved; pumpkin-spice lattes were back as a seasonal favorite—her favorite, too.

Lois listened intently as Melanie recounted the events of the past week. Lois was, of course, interested in Meaghan and Ali. When Meaghan was growing up, Meaghan had called her “Aunt Lois.”

Melanie then began to talk about Mark. Melanie was surprised when Lois had plenty to say on that topic: “Mel, while you didn’t know it, I have been following the transits to your natal chart. The challenging side of Uranus is transiting your seventh house. So, there can be unexpected surprises with close relationships. Further,” Lois pointed out with a dramatic flourish, “Uranus is opposing your natal Neptune in your first house.”

“Can you say that in English?” Melanie asked.

“Well, your first house describes yourself. Neptune in your first house denotes you as being an idealistic person. Being that you are a Libra, you are idealistic about relationships. Right now there can be unforeseen challenges to your relationships. These challenges can ‘zap’ your idealism and confuse you. What Mark said about dessert came as an unexpected surprise to you. His image zapped your idealism about the relationship.”

Lois had her full attention now. Melanie said, “Tell me more about these ‘houses.’”

“In every natal chart, there are twelve houses. Each house refers to the specific area of life that is affected by the particular planet in it. The planet is the energy, and the sign is how that planet’s energy will be expressed.”

Trying to absorb it, Melanie asked, “Anything else?”

“Yes, one more thing. You do have Jupiter in the ninth house. Jupiter is the planet of opportunity. This situation means that it is possible you will have an opportunity to travel.”

“Wow, this stuff is really mind-boggling. I can see why you have studied it so hard,” Melanie said to her friend. “I am not really into this astrology stuff, as you know, but I have heard that it is a very deep self-analysis. I guess it has a lot of merit.”

A few days passed, and Melanie hadn’t heard a word from Mark. Thinking a lot about what Lois had said made her feel somewhat uneasy. Having all those planets moving around made her feel like her life was being controlled.

She had settled back into her routine and was feeling lost, abandoned, and sad. She tried to keep her chin up and hoped Mark was working out his family problems. But what if these problems brought him closer to Susan? He might ultimately leave Melanie at the curb. Nonetheless, she really didn’t want to suffocate him with e-mails, so she waited. Then this e-mail arrived:
